About Joel L. Michaels

Joel L. Michaels is the partner-in-charge of the Health Law Department in McDermott Will & Emery LLP’s Washington, D.C., office. He has extensive experience in health care insurance and health care delivery system organization, financing and regulation. Joel has assisted clients in obtaining state and federal licenses, contracts and approvals and in developing viable organizational and contractual arrangements, including transactions involving the sale of stock, merger or transfer of assets. Joel also counsels payor clients on a wide variety of federal law issues, including Medicare and Medicaid regulation (including Parts C and D), the False Claims Act, the Federal Anti-Kickback Statute, ERISA, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). He has worked with health plans and other payors on pharmacy benefit management contracts and related regulatory issues involving pharmaceutical pricing and benefit design. About Karen S. Sealander

Karen S. Sealander is legislative counsel in McDermott Will & Emery LLP and is based in the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office.   A member of the Firm’s Government Strategies practice, Karen has more than two decades of experience representing and counseling health care providers, health insurance plans, integrated health care delivery systems, professional associations of health care providers and others in the health sector on legislative, regulatory and legal matters.  She worked extensively on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, legislation enacted in March 2010 which reformed the nation’s health care delivery system. Karen has presented to the National Commission on Allied Health and has testified before the Senate Special Committee on Aging and the Institute of Medicine Committee on the Future of Dental Education. Karen has extensive experience formulating and implementing legislative and regulatory strategies, planning and coordinating Government Days on Capitol Hill, drafting written comments to federal agencies, preparing testimony and witnesses for congressional committee hearings, assessing and shaping congressional and executive branch developments of potential impact, meeting with congressional and administration officials, and coordinating coalition activities, among other services. Eric Zimmerman is a partner in McDermott Will & Emery LLP’s Washington, D.C., office.
